Subject: UCLA Extension Certificate Programs - UPDATE

Greetings from UCLA Extension and sunny Southern California. We hope 2016 was a good year for you all and we wish you a prosperous 2017.

Below are a few bits of news we’d like to share at this time.

1.      The English proficiency requirement for UCLA Extension certificate programs will change effective summer 2017. So, all applicants for summer 2017 and beyond will be subject to this new English proficiency requirement.

Most certificate programs require a minimum score of 83 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Internet-based-test (iBT) or a minimum score of 6.5 of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).  Some programs require submission of higher TOEFL or IELTS scores.  Please check http://international.uclaextension.edu/list-of-certificate-programs-for-international-students/ to see TOEFL or IELTS score that is required for your program.

Students are not required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores if:  1) the student is a native speaker of English from Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, English-speaking Canada, or the United Kingdom, or 2) the student has earned a graduate degree from a  college or university in the U.S., Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, English-speaking Canada, or the United Kingdom,  3) the student declares that English is their second language and provides a transcript showing completion of at least 4 years of instruction from a high school, university, or college in the U.S., Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, English-speaking Canada, or the United Kingdom, or 4) the student is  transferring from Extension’s American Language Center with a grade of “A-” or higher from level 107 or above in the Academic Intensive English Program.

Students who have the minimum TOEFL or IELTS score required for their certificate program, but whose TOEFL is below 100 or IELTS is below 7, must take and pass academic English courses as a requirement to complete the certificate program and be eligible to receive the certificate of completion and apply for OPT.  The following will determine which English courses students will be required to take:

TOEFL 83 – 90 or IELTS 6.5 with a 6 or below in writing – ESL X 433 B

TOEFL 91 – 99 or IELTS 6.5 with 6.5 or above in writing – ESL X 433 C.

Students who are placed into ESL X 433B must also take and pass ESL X 433C to complete their certificate program. 

Students who are admitted to the certificate program by submitting their ALC transcript showing grades of A- or higher in level 107 of the Academic Intensive English Program are required to take and pass both ESL X 433B and ESL X 433C.

2.      UCLA Extension is now a TOEFL receiving institution. Please let students know the UCLA Extension institutional code is 4901.
We will soon be an IELTS receiving institutions, as well, so we’ll be able to see student IELTS scores as early as January 2017.

3.      The International Student Office (ISO) at UCLA Extension has a new Director, Ms. Christina Wong (wwong@unex.ucla.edu).

4.      UCLA Extension in planning to recruit in China, Taiwan, Japan, Spain, France, Thailand, Vietnam, Turkey, and Kazakhstan in the first half of 2017. We look forward to seeing some of you while we’re on the road.

5.      UCLA Extension will have a booth for NAFSA 2017. The conference is, after all, in Los Angeles. We hope you will visit us at booth 747.
