University of California대학 연합 총괄 학장이신 Janet Napolitano의 서신

어제 선거 결과와 관련하여, UC 커뮤니티 구성원 중에는 이해 할 만한 경악과 불확실성이 있다는 사실을 잘 알고 있습니다. UC는 한결같이 다양성을 유지 해 왔다는 점과 광범위한 배경과 다양한 경험 그리고 올바른 선견지명을 갖은 학생, 교수진, 및 교직원의 보금자리가 되어 왔다는 사실에 긍지를 느낍니다. 다양성이야 말로 우리가 추구하는 사명의 정점입니다.

우리는 전적으로 우리 커뮤니티에 속한 모든 구성원의 안녕을 유지하기 위해 노력할 것이며 ‘무관용에 맞서다’라는 UC의 신념을 고수 할 것입니다. 명확한 우리의 신념으로 UC는 ‘모두가 포함’되고 ‘모두가 동등한 배움과 탐구의 권리를 부여 받는’ 환경을 조성하기 위해 노력 하겠습니다.  UC는 현재 및 미래에도 이러한 원칙을 계속해서 추구하고 보호 할 것이고, 우리 학생, 교수진, 교직원 및 대학과 연관 된 모든 다른 이들 또한 그렇게 해 주실 것을 당부 드립니다.

우리는 UC가 추구하는 것에 자부심을 느끼며 그런 긍정의 메시지를 우리 주 및 미국에 계신 다른 이들에게 전해 지기를 희망합니다.

Subject: U.S. Election 2016 results

Dear UC Berkeley Extension IDP representative:

The election process of 2016 was truly remarkable and yielded surprising results no matter what political association U.S. citizens identified with. 

As an institution committed to international education, we understand that government and political changes cause a certain level of anxiety and concern for parents and students considering travel abroad. As our representative, you will undoubtedly be asked about the political climate in the U.S. after the elections and whether there should be concerns to study abroad in the U.S. 

The University of California (UC) system, Berkeley Extension and the IDPs are committed to our international programs and we welcome continued participation from students around the world. Historically, elections are respected and the transition of power is peaceful in the U.S. We are not at a point to have to worry about the future of our international programs. We also suspect that even when Trump takes power on January 20th, it will be a smooth transition. While there may be concerns about the feasibility of visas due to political discussions prior to the election, we have no reason to suspect that there would be difficulty in securing visas for study abroad programs.

Please know that we continue to strive to fulfill our mission to create a welcoming environment to all students considering a study-abroad experience in Berkeley and specifically UC Berkeley Extension and the IDP program. The City of Berkeley and the San Francisco Bay Area will continue to be a vibrant community that values student life, diversity and our international friends, students and colleagues.

It's important to note that the University of California as well as countless of colleges and universities across the nation are equally committed to diversity, internationalization and accessibility to education for students from all around the world. On this note, I'd like to share the following message from UC leaders across the state of California:

In light of yesterday's election results, we know there is understandable consternation and uncertainty among members of the University of California community.  The University of California is proud of being a diverse and welcoming place for students, faculty, and staff with a wide range of backgrounds, experiences and perspectives.  Diversity is central to our mission.  

We remain absolutely committed to supporting all members of our community and adhering to UC’s Principles Against Intolerance.  As the Principles make clear, the University “strives to foster an environment in which all are included” and “all are given an equal opportunity to learn and explore.”  The University of California will continue to pursue and protect these principles now and in the future, and urges our students, faculty, staff, and all others associated with the University to do so as well.

We are proud of what the University of California stands for and hope to convey that positive message to others in our state and nation.
